Chemical Compound Called Glyphosate
They come, they spray, they slap a note on the door letting you know not to go on the grass or let the dogs out for fear they will sniff the lawn chemicals. The product RoundUp is a chemical product that is sprayed to kill weeds. If you have a lawn service it’s pretty typical that the company’s services come with weed killing chemicals, usually RoundUp based. This product is made with a dangerous synthetic chemical compound called glyphosate. This compound is dangerous to not only a dog’s nose, but the human body. Let’s check out more facts on glyphosate below!
A Synthetic Compound Chemical
Glyphosate is a synthetic compound chemical that is considered to be an herbicide. It’s main use is to be sprayed on unwanted perennial weeds and other unwanted plants. Glyphosate was first introduced to America in the 1970s in a product called RoundUp. It was patented by Monsanto (an agricultural company that works with farmers to grow food) and was first used on growing crops in 1974. In the year 2000, glyphosate came out from under Monsanto and is now used in abundant amounts on America’s food and crop supply. These facts on glyphosate means that this chemical can be used on any crop that is grown, with any company out there. That’s is a lot of glyphosate friends.
What Does Glyphosate do to a Plant?
The glyphosate compound is an herbicide that kills plants. But, exactly what does glyphosate do to a plant? It goes into a plant’s enzyme pathway, called the shikimic acid pathway. In a growing plant, this pathway is needed for making proteins so that the plant can thrive and grow. Glyphosate is the number-one ingredient in the product RoundUp. Not only are lawn services using RoundUp to kill weeds in our yards, but it’s being used by crop growers to kill unwanted weeds that crowd food growth.
RoundUp is the leading product used on growing crops so that farmers can more quickly start the next set of growing crops. Genetically modified foods (GMOs) such as corn, soy, canola, sugar beets, cotton, tobacco, and alfalfa are being made to tolerate being sprayed with products that contain glyphosate. Why? It’s like an immune response. When a food is created to contain glyphosate, farmers can spray glyphosate products to treat weeds with out harming the crop. The crop is now immune to the spraying of weed killer. It is also being used as a drying agent on crops that are already harvested. What do these facts on glyphosate mean? This means that farmers can grow, dry, and harvest crops faster than they are organically meant to. Which also means more $$$$.
Too Much of Anything is a Bad Thing
Well, that wraps up my small bit of glyphosate facts! Are you interested in exactly what it does to the body? Unfortunately, none of it is good! The human body is a pretty amazing thing and it can do pretty awesome things. It can ward off sickness when it is strong, it can create essential things for the body out of food nutrients, and it can dispose of inorganic things that cross our paths. However, it is not meant to be able to be warding off an overabundance of inorganic things on the daily. Too much of anything is a bad thing.
